In the fast-paced world of social media marketing, having a well-structured content calendar is essential for success. It helps you stay organised, maintain consistency, and deliver engaging content to your audience. In this blog post, we will explore the importance of a content calendar for real estate agents and property professionals and provide practical tips on how to create one that drives results to help you achieve your marketing goals.

Understanding the Benefits of a Content Calendar

Before we dive into HOW to use a content calendar to plan your social media marketing, we need to first understand why it is important. Simply put, a content calendar gives you a clear plan to keep you on track and accountable for delivering your marketing strategy. A content calendar offers numerous advantages for your social media strategy, including:

Streamlined Planning and Organisation

A content calendar allows you to plan your social media content in advance, ensuring a consistent flow of posts. By having a visual overview of your content schedule, you can easily see what’s coming up and strategically align your posts with your marketing objectives.

Improved Time Management

With a content calendar, you can dedicate specific blocks of time to content creation and scheduling. By batching your tasks, you’ll be more efficient, freeing up valuable time to focus on other aspects of your business. No more posting on the fly with fluffy content that doesn’t add value to your brand or inspire your audience.

Consistency and Cohesion

By mapping out your content in advance, you can maintain a consistent tone, style, and messaging across all your social media platforms. This cohesiveness helps to establish a strong brand identity and fosters trust with your audience.

Steps to Create an Effective Content Calendar

Start by defining your goals and target audience

Before diving into content creation, clearly define your social media goals and identify your target audience. Consider the following:

  • What are your objectives? Are you aiming to increase brand awareness, drive website traffic, generate leads, or foster engagement?
  • Who is your target audience? Understand their demographics, preferences, and interests to tailor your content accordingly.

Then, research and brainstorm content ideas

Research and brainstorming will help you generate compelling content ideas:

  • Conduct market research to identify industry trends, popular topics, and relevant keywords.
  • Brainstorm creative content ideas that align with your brand and resonate with your target audience.
  • Consider different content formats, such as videos/reels, infographics, stories and blog posts to add variety to your content strategy.

Now it’s time to plan your content calendar

Once you have your goals and content ideas, it’s time to create a content calendar:

  • Start by identifying your Content Pillars.  These are the overarching topics that your posts will fall under.  Common ones for the real estate industry include:
    • Social proof: testimonials from past clients (be sure to tell the story behind the testimonial when you share social proof posts)
    • Educational: posts that educate your audience on real estate topics and help them to buy or sell property more confidently.
    • Local area: for most real estate agents and conveyancers, their local area is a big part of who they are. Often, you’ll be extremely active in your community and this pillar is a chance for you to highlight your ties to the local area.
    • Team & culture: posts under this pillar tell the story about who you and your business are, and help to build those deep connections that you’re seeking with your audience.
    • Listings: this is a no-brainer of course for real estate agents to showcase properties that you have on the market, as well as your recent results.
  • Choose a calendar tool or platform that suits your needs.  You don’t need to pay for a dedicated social media platform. A great and actually very efficient way to content plan for free is by simply using Google Docs and then scheduling your content straight into Meta’s Business Suite.  If you’re looking for a paid option, Pallyy and Later are both excellent options.
  • Determine your posting frequency based on your audience’s engagement patterns and available resources. Also, consider how often you can realistically post.  There is no point deciding to post every day when in reality you know you won’t be able to dedicate sufficient time to making this happen. You’ll set yourself up for failure before you’ve even begun.  Instead, two to three times a week is generally a realistic target for more busy property professionals. Then, using your content pillars, determine how often you’ll post about each one over the month, based on the realistic posting frequency that you’ve decided on. This will ensure a balanced mix of content.

Executing and optimising your content plan

Create Engaging Content

When you’re writing your captions, you want to focus on crafting compelling content that captures your audience’s attention. You can do this by using attention-grabbing headlines and calls to action that encourage engagement. Incorporate visually appealing images, videos, or graphics to enhance the visual appeal of your posts. Ensure that YOU feature on your socials at least every few posts.  For most property professionals, you ARE your brand, so people need to see you in order to connect with you.

A great way to write engaging content is to use storytelling techniques.  Storytelling connects emotionally with your audience and conveys your brand’s narrative.  We dived deep into the power of storytelling in our previous blog post.

It’s time to schedule and publish your content!

Efficiently schedule and publish your content to maximise reach and engagement. Utilise social media scheduling tools to plan and automate your posts across different platforms. If you’re just posting to Facebook and Instagram, Meta Business Suite allows you to schedule your content in advance for free.

When you’re scheduling your content, optimise your posting times based on your audience’s online activity and peak engagement periods. So, if you’re targeting families with young kids looking to upgrade it’s probably not wise to be posting around 5-6pm when they’ll be busy dealing with their kids. Instead, you might post later in the evening when they’re sitting and scrolling after the kids have gone to bed.

But, it’s also important to consider when YOU can be active. We don’t want to ‘post and ghost’. What we mean is, you should be active on social media around the time that your post goes live. That way, when people leave comments or ask questions, you’re ready to jump in and respond to them straight away and keep the conversation going.

Finally, you’ll want to monitor and analyse the performance of your posts, adjusting your content strategy as needed.  We talk about how to measure the success of your social media marketing efforts in this post.

Be flexible and adapt

Stay agile and responsive to current events or trending topics that are relevant to your industry.  Don’t worry about how ‘pretty’ your grid looks or that you don’t have the perfect photo to accompany a new post. The most important thing is to be authentic and real and share knowledge and value.  This is how your ‘know/like/trust’ factor will grow exponentially.
